Sylvia Harmon Showcase

Sylvia Lee Bennett Harmon was born in the little town of Lockport, New York.

My aunt was a ceramicist, and I loved watching her work in her studio. My cousin was an art teacher and she would encourage me to draw and paint so my love of creating came at an early age.

I studied clinical chemistry in college and that was as far from creativity as one could get. Marriage and a career in the sciences and having babies did not leave much time for developing my artistic skills.

When the children were older I started taking stained glass classes from a master craftsman. I loved working with the glass and all of its unique processes. I designed windows and built them for my home and some commission work.

Several years after retiring a friend encouraged me to take some watercolor classes with her. The instructor was a very accomplished transparent watercolorist, and she gave us very constructive critiques of our projects. I also wanted to try acrylics and pastels so I took some classes to familiarize myself with those techniques.

I am still very much a newbie working to become more proficient in my art but I love love love the process. I am currently taking classes through on-line websites.
